At Time 4 cognitive Plasticity (Baltes, 1987; Kliegl & Baltes, 1987) in several domains was estimated by assessing performance changes after test repetition. The "Cognitive Plasticity Test Battery" (compiled by Neher, M. M. Baltes, and Lindenberger) contained tests measuring three intellectual abilities: perceptual speed, reasoning, and memory.

Plasticity in memory was assessed by repeating an 8-item free recall memory test three times (NAI-Wortliste, Oswald & Fleischmann, 1986). A list of eight words (city, coast, peach, girl, armchair, celebration, beggar, nail) were read aloud at 2-second intervals by the interviewer. At the end of the list, the participant was asked to recall as many as possible in any order. The performance changes after test repetition (cognitive plasticity scores) provide estimates of participants' baseline reserve capacity.
